The History of Harley-Davidson
Harley-Davidson is one of the world’s most iconic motorcycle brands, but it didn’t get that way overnight. Not many people know the story of this illustrious company’s early years. That is why Trev Deeley Motorcycles has created this short piece on the origins of the Harley-Davidson brand.
The Beginning
Harley-Davidson gets its name from its two founders, childhood friends William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson. Wanting to conquer the hills of Milwaukee, but finding that simply adding a single-cylinder engine to a pedal bike didn’t provide enough power, they went back to the drawing board. The duo removed the pedals in order to focus on the engine, releasing their very first models in 1904.
The pair kept on innovating and soon opened a factory so they could produce bikes at a greater pace. Seven years of improvements later, Harley and Davidson released a motorcycle that offered double the horsepower of their initial model. Harley-Davidson® motorcycles soon became a common sight in racing circles.
Making a Name for The Company
World War One brought an urgent need for quality motorcycles, and the company received an order for 20,000 bikes. By the end of 1920, Harley-Davidson was called the "largest motorcycle manufacturer on the planet", providing them with enough momentum to survive the Great Depression. During World War Two, Harley-Davidson outdid itself by producing over 90,000 bikes.
The Bikes Today
Returning veterans clamored for Harley-Davidson bikes, many having used one during their service, and the company enjoyed a post-war boom. Today, Harley-Davidson continues to innovate, building on its experience to produce excellent models year after year.
