Four steps for proper winter storage

Step 1 :

Fuel stabilizer, which is available at just about any auto parts store, should be added to the fuel tank. The amount will vary depending on tank size but in the average 5 gallon tank you would add 3.0 ounces of stabilizer, then top up the tank with fuel and run the bike for about 60 seconds. This will ensure that the stabilizer has gone through the entire system and will prevent the fuel from breaking down, which can cause damage to the fuel system.

Step 2 :

A 12 volt trickle charger, such as the H.D. "Battery Tender Junior" (Part # 94654-98) should be attached to the battery and kept on for the entire time the bike is stored. This will provide a constant top up charge to the battery and will ensure that the charging system is ready to go for next spring.

Step 3 :

Fogging the cylinders, is a good idea for those of us without a heated garage (or living room) to park our babies in. This process prevents moisture from causing corrosion in the combustion chambers. Fogging oil can be found at any auto parts store and should be applied by first removing the air cleaner and cover from the bike, then giving a generous shot of oil into the intake with the bike running. Secondly you would remove the spark plugs and shoot a 3 second burst into each cylinder, followed by re-installing the spark plugs.

Step 4 :

A Harley-Davidson bike cover is another good way to ensure your bike remains dirt and dust free during the winter season. These covers are available in various sizes depending on the model of bike.

By following these 4 steps you can minimize the amount of unwanted "surprises" that can put a damper on the beginning of the next riding season. If this is a little beyond the scope of your technical ability then feel free to call us in the Service Department. We can make arrangements to prep your bike for storage for you.
